You’ve probably heard the term “I open my mouth, and my mother comes out” before. But few of us realise that motherhood can turn you into your mom. Seriously. You and your mom are 100% different in thousands of ways. You’re all over the place while she’s organised. And while you’re a procrastinator, she’s always organized.
But after having kids of your own, a shift happens within a woman’s mind. Perhaps it’s because you’re getting a taste of your own medicine and realise that your mom wasn’t nearly as annoying or embarrassing as you always thought she was.
Here are some things that you never thought would happen to you. Here’s to realising just how awesome your mom is and how turning in to her isn’t such a bad thing after all.
How you turn into your mom when you become a mom
The things that used to annoy you as a kid are things you do today, as a mom.
When you were growing up, some things could drive you bonkers. But now, as you turn into your mom, here’s what you also find yourself doing:
- Asking your kids when they’ll get up in the morning to get ready
- Yelling after nicely asking your kids to tidy up their rooms for the 45th time
- Enquiring with your kids whether they’re sure they want to wear that
- Reorganising the dishwasher after asking someone else to load it
- Always reminding everyone about the importance of considering what they say
- Flooring it in the car whenever you get annoyed
Your physical features start looking like hers
You probably never imagined your boobs losing their perk from the journey of breastfeeding. Or that you’d develop crow’s feet around your eyes. Or that you’d one day trade in your toned body for a “softer” version of yourself. But now that you’re a mom, you’re going through the same physical changes your mom went through when you were a kid. And it kind of makes you feel guilty that you treated her for it back then.
Fashion sense is something you and your mom share now
When you were in high school, you didn’t even consider trying on some of your mom’s clothes. Back then, her wardrobe was a closet of nightmares. But today, you’re thankful you get to borrow that pretty top from her. It looks better than the one you were wearing in any case. Since your bodies are now very similar, her clothes are just as flattering on you as they are on her.
Selfishness has been replaced with selflessness
Before you got married and had kids, your life was about YOU. And you took advantage of your mom’s giving heart plenty of times. But that isn’t the case anymore. Your plans, time, actions, decisions, all of that is wrapped up in your family, not just you.
