It can be easier said than done to help your kids understand the importance of love and what a big difference it can make in the world around them. So here’s a little tried and tested advice.
Tips for helping your kids understand the importance of love
1. Make your kids feel important.
You never, ever want your kids to think that whatever you’re busy with is more important than they are. This means that when your kids approach you for a quick chat, you have to put away the distractions and pay attention to them, even if just for a few minutes. Make sure your kid hears you praising them and don’t forget to tell them you love them, every single day of their lives!
Let them stretch outside of their comfort zones.
If your kid is a regular attendant of dance classes or soccer camp, why not encourage them to try something new? Help your kids see that there’s nothing to be afraid of when we’re trying new things in life; this will give them the confidence they’ll need to make change a healthy, life-long habit.
3. Show them how to give to those in need.
When you’re volunteering your time and attention, there’s a beautiful feeling that pays out as the reward. You feel warmer and more connected to others, others who are important and worthy. In turn, you begin to feel the same for yourself. Model this behavior to your kids and teach them about the important impact it has on the SELF, not just on the outside world.
4. Help your kids identify their strengths.
What are your kids really good at? Not all of us have traditional or blatantly obvious skills, but we all do have our own unique strengths. You may have to help your kid dig a little to find the original and unique nuggets, but when you discover them, you’ll help them see where those strengths can really come in handy in life.
5. Lead by a loving example.
Eating healthy, spending time with positive people, valuing yourself, cultivating a satisfying hobby, exercising, drinking loads of water, and taking time for yourself are all essential aspects of loving yourself and getting yourself into a positive mindset towards your inner self and life in general, and your kids need to see that you’re leading by example.
As parents, we need to teach our kids that LOVE is the foundation of life. It’s one of the greatest gifts we can give them. We need to teach them that loves makes the most difference in the lives of other kids and in our own lives.
